Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve periodically featured Kossan, a Japanese Buddhist monk who has a penchant for singing punk, metal and rock classics, accompanied by gongs, drums and other instruments. In the past, he’s covered the Ramones’ “Teenage Lobotomy,” “Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” and the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine”–not to mention Judas Priest’s “Breaking the Law.” In his latest clip, Kossan offers a unique take on Metallica’s 1991 classic “Enter Sandman,” then winds down, of course, with a little meditation. When Bob Dylan released his 2001 album Love and Theft , he lifted the title from a book of the same name by Eric Lott , who studied 19th century American popular music’s musical thefts and contemptuous impersonations. The ambivalence in the title was there, too: musicians of all colors routinely and lovingly stole from each other while developing the jazz and blues traditions that grew into rock and roll.
